Police, Adjective English Film Synopsis:

A cop finds himself growing uncomfortable with his latest assignment in this study in the nature of power and authority from Romaniandirector Corneliu Porumboiu. Cristi (Dragos Bucur) is a seasoned police detective who has just gotten married to Anca (Irina Saulescu) and wants to keep his superiors happy. Cristi's boss, Nelu (Ion Stoica), has ordered the detective to keep a close watch on Victor (Radu Costin), a teenager who is suspected of dealing drugs for a local cartel. Cristi has spent several weeks following Victor's actions and is certain that the kid smokes marijuana with his friends, but isn't any kind of drug pusher and should be left alone. Cristi is also aware that Romanian authorities are expected to relax their laws regarding drugs in the near future, making it all but pointless to possibly ruin Victor's life by bringing him in, but while Nelu understands Cristi's thinking, he's not so willing to let the youngster off so easily. Politist, Adj. (aka Police, Adjective) was an official selection at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.
Hollywood Movie Review :
One of the most critically-acclaimed films of the year and a double prize winner at Cannes, POLICE, ADJECTIVE is the new whip-smart, dryly funny comedy from Corneliu Porumboiu (12:08 EAST OF BUCHAREST). The film is Romania’s official entry to the 2009 Academy Awards. Cristi (Dragos Bucur) is a young undercover cop who undergoes a crisis of conscience when he is pressured to arrest a teenager who offers hash to classmates.



Not wanting to ruin the life of a young man he considers merely irresponsible, Cristi must either allow the arrest tobe a burden on his conscience, or face censure by his self-serious superior (Vlad Ivanov of 4 MONTHS, 3 WEEKS AND 2 DAYS), for whom the word “conscience” has an entirely different meaning. Porumboiu approaches his story with the exacting patience of a master ironist, culminating in one of the most unexpected comedic payoffs in years, – an extraordinary dissection of language that affirms his reputation as one of the most exciting new talents in European cinema.Corneliu Porumboiu is the writer anddirector of the Romanian film Police, Adjective . While he was in Los Angeles for AFI Fest, I was able to spend some time with him talking about the film. Also present was Corina Suteu,Director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, to help as needed with translation. Most of the interview was in English, but occasionally some translation was needed or Ms. Suteu would add clarifying comments.

DM: You and other Romanian directors whose films have made it to the US all have a very strong sense of realism. Could you comment a bit about how realism drives your work and the work of Romanian filmmakers in general?

CP: I think all of us, we grew up in a period when cinema was a propaganda tool. So this reaction is a visceral one. We are interested in Romania today and what is happening today. At the same time I think all of us make stories about people we know—about daily life. So I think we have a common taste and common problematic. From here is coming this kind of realism.
DM: While much of the film is police procedural, it becomes more philosophic, dealing with questions of "law," and "justice." How do you see the relationship between law and justice?

As Harvey leaves his heartbreak at the ceremony for an emergency work call, he misses his flight and gets fired. While nursing a whiskey at the airport bar, Harvey bumps into Kate (Emma Thompson), an airport employee escaping her own bad day with a glass of wine and a book. Suddenly taken by Kate's British charm, a tipsy Harvey bombards her with tales of his trouble. This unlikely trading of sob stories leads to lunch, a walk around London, and a day of unexpected romance. Thompson is charming as Kate, a lonely middle-age woman struggling to deal with her mother's constant prying into her life. Despite not having had the best of luck in romance, Kate is an optimist at heart, and it's this spark for life that attracts Harvey and ultimately helps repair his image in his daughter's eyes. Never showy or too ambitious, Joel Hopkins's slow-paced romance twists old clichés to suit a more adult audience. While not groundbreaking in its plot,LAST CHANCE HARVEY is saved by great performances from the always-solid Hoffman and the incredibly charming Thompson, who makes an otherwise familiar story feel fresh

Even when they’re walking uneven shoulder to shoulder and hitting their professional marks note for note, Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson don’t make a lot of sense as a screen couple. But there’s something irresistible about watching two people fall in love, even in contrived, sniffle- and sometimes gag-inducing films like “Last Chance Harvey,” which means that when he looks at her and she looks at him, there’s a good chance that they won’t be the only ones in the theater falling for all the hokey lines and shy glances.

It takes a while for those bashful looks to start darting around in this film, largely because the writer and director Joel Hopkins initially keeps his two main characters apart in order to milk their respective loneliness for maximum pathos. The story opens with Harvey Shine (Mr. Hoffman), a frustrated jazz pianist who writes jingles for a living, struggling to hold onto his gig while en route to his daughter’s wedding in London.

By the time he has landed and breezed past an airline employee who is trying to snare deplaned passengers with a weary smile, a clipboard and a questionnaire, the movie has introduced the woman who will change his life: that conveniently situated clipboard wrangler, Kate (Ms. Thompson).

Muallaf Malaysian Movie Review :
The late Yasmin Ahmad left a legacy that was hard to follow. She, one of Malaysia's most forward-thinking directors left a gaping hole when she passed away at the age of 51 in July 2009. Though her last movie "Talentime" was only released in March 2009, the powers-that-be, decided it appropriate to release her controversial long-awaited movie "Muallaf" in Malaysia at the end of 2009. Initially targeted for a July 2009 release, it was threatened with censorship that would affect the story's progress.

For the record, "Muallaf" had been released earlier in neighbouring Singapore to a much warm reception in December 2008 and due to the increasing demand, it was later re-released in February 2009.


Yasmin's muse, actress Sharifah Amani stars as Rohani. Tagging along for the ride is sister, Sharifah Aleysha playing as younger sister Rohana. The story tells of two Muslim sisters who are runaways from their abusive father and are forced to fend for themselves in Ipoh, Perak. Their father, a Datuk (Datuk Rahim Razali) is a partying and alcoholic man who is married to a much younger woman (Ning Baizura) with hair the size of a beehive. Their lives collide with that of Rohana's History teacher, Brian (newcomer Brian Yap) who has issues with his Catholic faith since an incident from his childhood.

All the actors did a swell job in translating Yasmin's work to the screen. Be warned though that you might notice some not-so subtle censorship done in the movie, however it does not hinder the story much. If you've ever watched a Yasmin Ahmad film, you'd know what to expect in her usual way of concealing themes in her film without being overly patronising.

Tamil Film Reviw :
There are certain ambiguities that need to be sorted out after watching 'Kandha Kottai'. How come filmmakers are still beating the same bush with hackneyed stories? If so, how do producers okay such scripts and turn them into pictures spending lavish money? We're sure; you will walk out of theatres with so many questions in your mind after watching this film.
The film is about Siva (Nakul), who strongly objects a thing called 'Love' and is dead against the lovers and alienates them at any cost. On the other end, we've Pooja (Poorna) in Nagercoil completely opposite in nature to Siva as she strives uniting the lovers. When Siva's sister Girija falls in love with Pooja's cousin boy in Chennai, she sets out to ensconce the proposal in an affirmative approach. But then, there are conflicts between the Siva and Pooja, who're like chalk and cheese.



Dheena's musical score is unimpressive for both songs and background score. Apart from 'Eppadi Ennul Kadhal Vandhadhu', none of the melodies sound commendable. Sakthivel hasn't given prominence to technical departments of cinematography and editing, as there are lots of discontinuities between the shots.

On whole, 'Kandha Kottai' lacks substantiality in both narrative and technical aspects and it has no chances of surviving at box office even for a week.

Post-production works are nearing completion for ‘Putrudu’ produced by Boddam Indrasena under the banner of Friends Film Academy introducing Sravan Bapatla as director, with the producer himself playing the hero and Tanisha pairing opposite him as heroine.

Producer says, “We first thought of producing the film in Telugu, but Sharma of Mumbai watched the trailers and suggested to release it in Hindi as well. Hence we have decided to bring outthe film simultaneously in Hindi and Tamil languages. There would be about 45 minutes of graphic works in our movie. All the songs were choreographed with superior quality. I would appear in a role which had two shades like Medico and Aghora.
