Veer Movie Review
It takes a brave man to say he'll take the flak if a film fails, and in the same breath mention that it would be to everyone's credit if it succeeds. This is precisely what Salman Khan has gone on record to say about his recent release VEER, the story of which is credited to him as well.

It also takes a brave man to dream of a magnum opus such as this. The period, the drama, the grandiose feel of it all and the amount of money pumped in, reportedly Rs 50 Cr.

CHECK OUT: Some unknown facts about the VEER 'Pindaris'!

Set in the 19th century, this period drama is no classic epic, but it has the trappings to keep you glued to your seat. Yes, there are loopholes in the screenplay and script and some silly moments as well, but once you see the brave attempt by the makers you cannot but laud it.

Only thing, they could have been more careful about the costumes worn by the lead actors. Difficult yes, but if enough research was done and as much importance given to it as the fight sequences, it could well have been another GADAR.

The story told is about Pindaris, a group of tribals, who were true to their word, and who preferred death to betrayal. It's their fight to unite India, to fight the British who ruled then. A very interesting plot thought of by Salman, who plays VEER. The film also has interesting twists even though 'Boy meets girl from enemy camp' remains the central theme. It moves away from the staid formula of parents opposing and lovers uniting against all odds.

Here, Veer wins the heart if his girl in enemy camp and also convinces his tribe to look beyond to the larger picture; that of uniting India in its fight for freedom rather than fighting against one Royal family to exact revenge. The plot has its heart in the right place.

Salman Khan as Veer is dashing and dynamic. He takes off from where he left in WANTED and LONDON DREAMS. His raw star power is full on display. Mithun Chakraborty is as solid as ever. Ditto Jackie Shroff. Much has been made of Newcomer Zarine Khan's resemblance to Katrina Kaif. According to me, the girl is a spitting image (healthier version) of Jacqueline Fernandez, who recently debuted in ALADIN.

CHECK OUT: VEER, Marathon, and New paradigms of marketing

Someone has rightly said, ''Let the attempt be a failure, but let there be no failure to attempt.'' Like a true Veer, Salman has taken a gamble, it's now left to be seen how the audience reacts to this fight to get the British out of India.

Somehow, I get this feeling that the dice is loaded in favour of Veer Salman!

Henry is one producer to whom entire Malayalam movie fans is indebted to. His only Malayalam movie 'Yavanika' that came out in the early eighties redefined the entire industry, which even gave way for the star status for one of the reigning superstars of present day Mollywood.

Henry later moved to produce big Tamil films like 'Kolangal,' 'Bharathi Kannamma,' 'Puthumai Pithan', 'Marumalarchi,' 'Kallazhakan,' 'Kannukku Kannaka’, under the banner of Pankaj Productions, which were all well received in Kollywood.

Movie Review
The Girl on the Train is based on a true story and was adapted from a play by Jean-Marie Besset. Andre Techine's film adaptation is about lies, people of wealth, Judaism and a anti-Semitic attack on a suburban train. It covers the complexities of human conditions and emotions. Techine is a French screenwriter and film director who has had a long and distinguished career that placed him among the best post-New Wave French film directors.

This provocative narrative revolves around a real event that took place in France in 2004. It is mirrored on psychological circumstances and consequences surrounding this rich drama about a bold lie. The plot is set in the low income suburbs of Paris where a series of spontaneous youth riots erupted in 2005. Film icon Catherine Deneuve and Emilie Dequenne are lead characters as mother and daughter Louise and Jeanne. Louise makes a living as a baby-sitter and Jeanne is a young woman who is attempting to find her place in life.

Young and naive Jeanne meets and falls in love with a university wrestler named Franck (Nicolas Duvauchelle). Franck works in a shady warehouse storing black-market goods and involves Jeanne in his illegal schemes. At the same time, she secures a secretarial position via her mother Louise's old admirer Samuel (Michael Blanc), a successful lawyer who defends Jewish cases. Jeanne is a fish out water in this job because she has little and no interest in religion or politics, although her dead father was an advocate for Jewish rights. However, the more she gets romantically involved with Franck and his crimes, the more she loses her principles. Franck eventually dumps Jeanne. Jeanne invents a web of lies saying she was a victim of an assault in a train by a group of Black and Arab youths who mistook her for a Jew. This is her way of attracting sympathy for herself.

Director Andre Techine uses actual court records in this adaptation and orchestrates a well oiled plot for this film. The film uses a host of characters to parallel each other which connect all scenarios. Actually, the film is divided into two parts; the circumstances leading up to the claims and the consequences from the lies. It breaks down to a theme of "truth and consequences" with exceptionally brilliant performances by Emilie Dequenne, Catherine Deneuve, and Nicolas Duvauchelle. They based their roles on newspaper articles and television images of unconscious racism and anti-Semitism.

The Girl on the Train displays a stimulating plot of dramatic entanglements that explore a complex family and social relationships haunting French society's fear.

Shock Festival - (2010)Movie Review

Full Cast And Crew
Director: Various
Writing Credits: Various
Rating: NR
Run Time: NA
Studio: Bloody Earth Films
Cast: Various,
Theatrical Release Date: NA
DVD Release Date: February 09, 2010

Review:There are many reasons I like “Shock Festival,” but the element that stands out to me the most is the amount of content. I literally spent an entire weekend going through all the grindhouse goodness that this DVD had to offer. I even have the trailer reel running in the background while I write this review.

But what is most impressive is the amount of detail that went into this project. Everything from the DVD menus to the mini-poster included within the DVD case is top notch. If you’re a collector, and nostalgic like I am, then you’ll appreciate it even more. Clearly the people from Bloody Earth films put their blood sweat and tears into this project and for that, I thank them.

I also thought the commentary tracks by Steven Romano were outstanding. This guy knows more about these old dirty gems than the fat guy who says “time to make the donuts” knows about getting up early. Steven could talk to you for an hour about how “Treasure of the Four Crowns” (a personal favorite of mine) was made and if the director liked cream in his coffee or not.

Side Note: In the book “Shock Festival” Steven includes photos of his living room where the walls are literally plastered with movie memorabilia. We see everything from a “Bad Lieutenant” poster to a “Dark Night at the Demon House” one-sheet. His ceilings are even lost to his madness. I guess that clears up the question if Steven is married or not.

Within the commentary tracks, Steven discusses the trailers within the reel of course, but also talks about growing up within the grindhouse world. He shares funny stories about the film industry, what it was like working with Don Coscarelli on “Phantasm” and even dabbles in current topics like the current remake craze. It’s all very interestingly geeky.

The last element of this bulging DVD set that I want to bring to your attention are the countless TV and radio spots found on disc three. See folks, I grew up in 80’s and spent my time watching films like “Porky’s”, “Gremlins” and “Stand By Me.” Eventually, I discovered the back room of my local ma-and-pa video store and that’s when I discovered films like “Grizzly”, “Motel Hell”, “The Toolbox Murders” and “Hell Night.” Years later, listening to the radio and television spots for these films is extremely nostalgic and satisfying.

I would say that there are close to 300 MP3 files and they have all been re-mastered and encoded with the original theatrical poster. I should also mention that these files are easily accessible which is great for transferring to portable devices like an iphone or PSP.

Overall, Shock Festival exceeded my expectations in every way. If you’re a fan of grindhouse, exploitation and horror films than this is a no brainer. My only complaint is that the DVD set didn’t come with a bar of soap because you’re going to need a shower after watching this sleaze. No, that’s a good thing people! Now if you will excuse me, the “Amazon Jail” trailer just came on. Gotta run!

Music Review of the album Toh Baat Pakki (2010):-

1. Jis Din
The album begins with a energetic song from Mika Singh. Jis Din is about celebration and excitement that happens before marriage. So, it is situational song, not for all moods.

2. Phir Se
Phir word is repeated a million times in this song. There are 2 versions - one by Sonu Nigam and other by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. The music and flow of the song is same in both the versions. It is a slow paced breezy love song. I'll choose Sonu Nigam's version if given a choice.

3. Dil Le Jaa
Punjabi touch is welcomed in this song. At this point, it is evident the music has definite special characteristics that only music director Pritam have, Nice effort overall.

4. Karle Mujhse Pyaar
The highlight of this album is Karle Mujhse Pyaar. Rock music and sufi singing always go well when Pritam is behind singing and music composing.

Overall Music Review of Toh Baat Pakki
The album has all the big names (singers) attached to it with Pritam as the sole music composer. Pritam does not deliver a superhit but nothing should be taken against him due to the theme of this film. Songs are just average but none of them can be called a chartbuster. And yes there is nothing copied in this collection.
