Agora Enfants admis Review :
Muddled film that has its sights set high in the right course but lacks focus and a direct script that can handle the subject matter. Alejandro Amenábar tries his best but comes up short in many ways with his narrative. The movie is a little too long and the script wavers from time to time but Rachel Weisz's performance is Oscar worthy and deserving of a better film that respects the effort she puts in it. She makes you stay with the movie, even when It sputters out of control during the last half of the film. She gets good support from her leading men (Max Minghella and Oscar Isaac) but its hard for the three of them to connect with how unfocused the script is and that's the film's biggest problem.
For Weisz's Oscar effort and the solid performances of her leading men, the movie gets a 7 but with out their performances, the movie would be much lower.

Alejandro Amenábar's masterpiece is a breathtaking excursion into religious fascism and misogynistic tyranny made special by Rachel Weisz, who probably give one of the best female acting performances in years as a scientist who was light years beyond her generation. Weisz is amazing and her performance is the show and then some. She's back up by Max Minghella, who is a great actor in his own right and Oscar Isaac, who is just as good. The triangle between them in believable and touch by their struggles to find their destinies. Its a moving cinematic piece of art and Alejandro does the story proud in his way of capturing the time of struggles of that time. Far and away, the best film I have seen all year.




AGORA brings 4th century Alexandria back to life with some expensive, elaborate sets combined with a bit of CGI where necessary. Other than a couple of alterations to historical facts, such as the manner and location of Hypatia's death and the creation of a fictional slave character, the production team obviously did a tremendous amount of research and they stuck closer to the real facts of history closer than your typical Hollywood film does (for whatever that's worth). I'm a bit of a history buff, and I'm always excited when an ancient city is re-created with such attention to detail. But it couldn't have worked without a great cast, and Rachel Weisz was perfect for her role. She had just the right combination of charm, strength and enthusiasm for math & philosophy to convince the audience that she was a legendary intellectual that could elicit loyalty from her male students and slaves too.

This film recreates the religious struggles of the late Roman Empire, the destruction of the Library of Alexandria, the ensuing ignorance and the relegation of women to 2nd class status in society. I greatly enjoyed watching this and I hope that many more such films are created in the future.

Gamines Français Film Review :
First I have to admit I was, initially, reluctant to go and watch this movie, as I have not read the original book, and I feared the plot would be too sweet and sentimental. But at the end of the screening, I felt a real enthusiasm that I would like to share here :

This film takes place in France during the 60's, and tells the story of a single mother with 3 preteen girls. This mother is an Italian who long-studied and now works hard in a layer office, doing her best to succeed more than the typical migrant, and give a good life to her daughters.



During the mother's long days of work, the girls are going to the public school or spending the rest of their days at home, home-working or imagining what happened to their father and why he disappeared. All the girls know from this man is that, from time to time, he is coming to their house, knocking loudly on the door, shooting to their mother to open and talk to him. Is their father crazy? Did he leave, or did her mother threw him away? When looking at the old family photos, the couple was looking so happy... what happened?
You will have to go to the theater to learn about those 3 formidable girls, her mother, and the unknown man.

This film is lifted by its delicate image quality, and its subtle depiction of the complex relations in a family. Additionaly, the scenarist and director did a very fine job to describe how the Italian immigrants were perceived in France during the sixties.
But, most of all, I was really moved by the figure of this Italian mother, which is leaving a weak man she still loves, to make sure her daughters will have a better life.
Both young and adult actresses did a great job, while Jean-Pierre Martins perfectly characterized the overprotective yet loving godfather.

Singularités d'une jeune fille blonde Spain Movie Review :
Is this the first movie by a hundred hear old director and is it any good? Clerk Trêpa working in his uncle's office becomes infatuated with the girl with the fan who he sees in the window opposite the one at which he clerks. He meets and wins her with curious ease but his uncle's unexplained opposition sends him off to Cape Verde where he makes a fortune off screen, that he loses equally easily and he finds his new intended has this alarming flaw - that's an hour and we can go home.



The simplicity of the staging and the glowing interior camera-work do contribute atmosphere but the emphasis is all over the place and the characterisations never connect up.

I'm not a great admirer of the films de Olivera made half a century back so I'm not likely to find this piece more than a curiosity. It has the Old Man Film quality of pieces like Huston's THE DEAD or IMMORTAL STORY without being as good.

Left by her husband and barely surviving the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, a Palestinian leaves the country with her adolescent son to start a new life with her sister in small-town Illinois. Once there, daily reality sets in and integration proves to be more difficult that expected, especially since the confused local population sees her as the enemy, somehow connected to Iraq and the attacks of 9/11. This moving tragicomedy was the winner of the FIPRESCI Prize during the Director's Fortnight at Cannes.

Amreeka Hollywood Movie Review :

This story follows a Middle-Eastern woman as she struggles living in an military-occupied West Bank. When she receives notice that she has been chosen in a lottery for a U.S. Green Card, she has to make the decision whether or not to uproot herself and her son for greener pastures. After making the decision to go, leaving her mother and brother behind, she realizes that life in Amreeka (America) is not all that she had dreamed it would be. Facing prejudice everywhere she turns, she makes other hard choices in trying to support her family...the son she brought to America with her and the relatives that she is staying with in the Midwest who are facing prejudice and struggling to make ends meet. In the end, this film reminds the viewer of the importance of family and the sacrifices we make for those we love.



Amreeka (the Arabic word for America) is a humorous and warm-hearted first feature from Cherien Dabis that follows a Palestinian woman, Muna (Nisreen Faour) and her sixteen-year-old son, Fadi (Melkar Muallem) from the checkpoints of the West Bank to the checkmates of racial animosity in a small town in Illinois near Chicago. Set in 2003 at the start of the Iraq War, Muna leaves Bethlehem because she desires a better life for her son and can no longer put up with overbearing Israeli police, the harangues of her elderly mother, and reminders of her philandering ex-husband.

The opening sequence in which Muna is ecstatic about receiving her Green Card in the mail and says tearful goodbyes to her family on her way to America joyously captures the closeness of family and their caring for each other in a lighthearted manner.
Unfortunately in the rest of the film things do not go as well for the young family. They have to deal with numerous incidents of overt and covert racism including bullying at school as they try to adjust to a new home and a new country. Things start off badly when Muna and Fadi are harassed for three hours at the airport by Israeli customs and a tin box filled with cookies and all of their savings are handed over by Fadi to customs officials.

Zinos (Adam Bousdoukos), a Greek-German who turns an empty warehouse space in Hamburg into a restaurant, has a very hectic life. His girlfriend is off to Shanghai to start a new job, the government wants money, his spine is killing him and to top it all off his smalltime crook of a brother (Moritz Bleibtreu) needs his help and a former friend from school is trying to take his restaurant away. Fatih Akin¹s energetic comedy is passionately directed and performed, but unfortunately remains somewhat superficial.

Soul Kitchen German Film Review :

Director Faith Akin is often called one of the most important contemporary German directors to have emerged in recent years. Soul Kitchen is Akin' highly anticipated first attempt at a genuine comedy. So far Akin has been has been more involved in the fields of drama and romance. In a recent interview he revealed he was curious to explore a more varied range of film genres which sounds like an interesting plan. In venice this year, the film was celebrated by the audiences and scored the special jury price.



The story revolves around a restaurant/club called Soul Kitchen and the troublesome life of its respectful owner Zinos. He has to overcome many struggles involving his girlfriend, his brother and the authorities. The film is set in the heart of the diverse northern German city of Hamburg, the home turf of the two scribes Faith Akin and Adam Bousdoukos.
Akin described how he studied classical sketches by Charlie Chaplin and also looked at his method of working. A simple "joke" that comes off easy and natural on screen had been reworked over and over. For some of the scenes Akin admittedly said he had to shoot 30 takes before it felt right. This made him doubt his own abilities but in the end let him grow as a filmmaker and as an individual.

The result is a stellar solid performance by the entire cast. Many jokes and payoffs will unfortunately and without a doubt get lost in translation but still the timing and heartblood of the actors will still capture anyone's attention.

Akin makes use of a couple of his "regulars": Adam Bousdoukos, Moritz Bleibtreu and the great Birol Ünel but also introduces fresh unknown blood with the two female leads Lucia Faust and Nadine Krüger.

Having just seen another film recently I noticed myself how well this film is balanced out in comparison. There is a rhythm, a beat or a harmony. The soundtrack and editing allow the plot to flow organically and let the narrative play out smoothly. Interestingly Akin once mentioned that since "Gegen die Wand" (Head On, 2004) he is inspired by the songs used in his films in a visual way and sets out a soundtrack before the filming is finished.

London 1818: a secret love affair begins between 23 year-old English poet, John Keats (Ben Whishaw), and the girl next door, Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish), an out-spoken student of high fashion. This unlikely pair begin at odds, he thinking her a stylish minx, while she was unimpressed not only by his poetry but also by literature in general.

However, when Fanny heard that Keats was nursing his seriously ill younger brother, her efforts to help touched Keats and when she asked him to teach her about poetry he agreed. The poetry soon became a romantic remedy that worked not only to sort their differences, but also to fuel an impassioned love affair.

When Fanny's alarmed mother and Keats' best friend finally awoke to their attachment, the relationship had an unstoppable momentum. Intensely and helplessly absorbed in each other, the young lovers were swept deeply into powerful new sensations, "I have the feeling as if we're dissolving," Keats wrote to her. Together they rode a wave of romantic obsession that only deepened as their troubles mounted.

Bright Star Australia film Review :

Keats's romance with Fanny Brawne and final days are brought to lovely life in Jane Campion's new film, Bright Star. He had TB, though it's never named. When he had become very ill, they sent him to Rome. How foolish! Its climate isn't healthy, though it might have seemed so compared to Hampstead. The house where Keats lived in Hampstead for two years and was in love with Fanny Brawne and wrote some of his has just been restored.



Campion's film may not be a deep investigation of poetical genius, but it's delicate and alive and infinitely touching. There's a delightful litte rosy-cheeked girl, and good use is made of cats. The handsome Regency house was then divided into two, one side occupied by Keats and his landlord and possessive companion Charles Brown, the other by a family called Brawne. He fell in love with Fanny Brawne, and she with him. She is creative in her own way, a brilliant seamstress and designer of clothing who was inventive with fabrics. She didn't know much about poetry but to go by the film, she crammed the classics to be able to talk to Keats and read all his poems and memorized many passages.

They recite them back and forth to each other, which may be artificial, but you don't mind, because the poetry is their love, it bloomed through their love and expresses it. Until he began coughing blood and ceased to write because he was suddenly too ill, Keats wrote some of his best work in Hampstead, in love with Fanny Brwwne.

They express their love in long sweet kisses, and walking hand in hand. This too is artificial but a fitting symbolic expression of the ecstasy and swoons of romantic poetry.

EXPECTATIONS

This is one team that is always ready to bend the way Hindi film music is perceived, conceptualised and presented. Time and again Gulzar and Vishal Bhardwaj have created a kind of musical outing which sounds absolutely fresh and yet bears their trademark quality stamp. Also, the power of soundtrack which is made as a result of their collaboration belongs to the kind that doesn't just loose itself amongst all the noise created by beats but also has a lyrical tale to tell. One doesn't expect anything lesser from Ishqiya.

OVERALL

What would immediately attract a music lover to Ishqiya is the credit details that include Vishal Bhardwaj and Gulzar.
